Scales Used in the Food Industry
It is always recommended that commercial kitchens utilise reliable food scales to avoid inconsistencies. Having the right weight and proportion of ingredients used in a recipe is essential for many food businesses. The consistency in taste is important for brand reliability and customer satisfaction, and can even make or break a business.
Accurate measurements of ingredients in the food processing and manufacturing level is equally important, as suppliers need to ensure that their customers receive what they have paid for particularly if it is based on weight. By using an accurate food-grade scale, suppliers can be sure that they are not under or over packing, therefore not failing compliance regulations nor reducing their own profits.
There are several different types of Food scales and inspection systems used in the food industry:
Checkweighers
A checkweigher is a high precision weighing system, and as its name suggests, it is designed to check the weight of individual products or packs during the manufacturing process along a production line. It is important for product quality control, as well as QA reporting to ensure the manufacturer complies with relevant retail and government standards and regulations.
A&D’s EZI-Check checkweighers are highly accurate and reliable, and will help to minimise product giveaways as well as contribute to reduction in production costs. They also come in a unique modular design, which is quick to install and easy to adapt to existing lines.
Food Metal Detectors

Metal detectors are often used by food manufacturing or packaging companies who need to check for metal contaminants in their production; pharmaceutical companies who need to inspect packaged drugs and medication; and more.

By using reliable and accurate food inspection systems, you can ensure that your production process meets industry standard requirements and safeguards your brand.
Food scales also help to take the guesswork out, ensuring that your measurement of ingredients are precise and accurate to the gram, or even the milligram depending on the balance or scale you choose.
Steps to clean your food scales:
● Turn the balance display off before cleaning
● Wipe the weighing pan and drip tray with a wet tissue or cloth daily, if possible
● Place the weighing pan, drip tray and draft shield panels in the dishwasher and wash with mild detergent if necessary
● Non-food contact surfaces such as the housing and terminal should also be cleaned
● Do not allow any substance to enter the internal parts
● Disinfect surfaces frequently to eliminate bacteria growth
● Do a final rinse to wash off all traces of dirt and detergent
● Reassemble the balance, ensure it is dry then switch it on and check that it is working properly
Some things to avoid:
● Be careful not to apply too much pressure on the balance pan, as this may damage the internal load cell mechanism
● Do not turn the scale upside down or shake it to remove residue
● Avoid harsh cleaning agents such as ethanol, as it will react with common ingredients including salt
● Any remaining salt on the scale should be wiped off quickly, as it can cause corrosion
The Tare function
The Tare function on digital kitchen scales is used to set the empty container weight to zero, so that only the weight of the content or material being weighed is displayed. The Tare feature is also useful for measuring multiple items in the same container: after weighing the first item, press the Tare button, and you can add the next item to weigh.
The Tare function is a very handy tool. Having the Tare function in your weighing scale helps to save time, and also helps to keep the scales clean.
Features to Look For
Whеn соnѕіdеrіng whаt fеаturеѕ аrе mоѕt іmроrtаnt tо уоu in a scale, іt will bе hеlрful tо thіnk аbоut whаt уоur аррlісаtіоn rеԛuіrеѕ аѕ wеll as the роwеr source аnd your роrtаbіlіtу needs. Thіѕ wіll hеlр уоu nаrrоw dоwn thе mоdеlѕ wіth fеаturеѕ suitable fоr уоur рurроѕе. We have outlined a fеw tо соnѕіdеr:
a) Maximum Capacity
It is important to know how much you need to weigh. Always select a scale with a capacity that is slightly larger than the heaviest load you need to weigh, so that accuracy is not compromised and the scale is not damaged by overloading. Also remember that the maximum weighing capacity should include the weight of the ingredients as well as the container or tray that holds them.
b) Weighing platform
Similar to capacity, you need to have a platform or pan size that is big enough to hold your ingredients.
c) Waterproof and IP rating
As food scales often come into contact with food, liquid and powder, it is important to get a weighing scale with a good IP rating. This would also make it easier for the scale to be thoroughly washed when needed, and remain hygienic and sanitise for it’s next use.
d) NMI Trade Approval
If the scale weight reading contributes directly to the final transaction price then yes you will need a trade approved scale. This is most commonly where the weight is directly multiplied by a price per weight unit to achieve a total price. i.e. a butcher would often need a trade approved scale.
e) Screen or display
A large display with backlight makes it easy to read the weighing results, improving efficiency and making the process quicker. Particularly if you are working in a bright environment, ensure the numbers in the indicator are particularly clear and bright.
f) Cost
It is also important to find a food scale that fits within your budget. Having said that, do bear in mind that it may sometimes be worthwhile investing in a higher quality food weighing scale that meets Australian standards, as it is more likely to perform better and last longer.

Testimonials
“A testimony to the A&D HV-KGL WP Series scale. One of our customers is in Rocklea, which had very severe flooding on 12/1/11. Their premises was under 4M of water. I believe it was like that for about 4 days. I picked the scale up from them on 20/1/11. It was the only scale they had not thrown out. Today I took the back off and found about 50mls of water inside. I disconnected the battery and power adaptor connection and connect it to a 9V supply. I pressed the ON button and guess what…IT STILL WORKED. I even re connected the load cell and it even weighs correctly. WHAT A SCALE!”

FAQ
What is a Trade Approved Scale?
A trade approved scale is tested by the National Measurement Institute of Australia (N.M.I) and complies with the weighing regulations governing trade transactions. When the unit is approved for trade in accordance with N.M.I standards, it will carry a distinctive approval number that should be in clear view. However an important detail to note: Although a scale is approved for trade in accordance with N.M.I standards, it still must be certified by a licensed scale certifier and a compliance certificate issued. A&D Weighing is able to provide this verification.
Is A&D an ISO certified company?
A&D Australasia Pty Ltd operates a Quality Management System which complies with ISO 9001:2015.
What is the difference between a balance and a scale?
Generally a balance weighs to a lower resolution than a scale. E.g. a typical balance may weigh 3kg x 0.01g and a scale 300kg x 100g.
